We look at the coat.

Is it curly?

Long?

Dense?

Wire-haired?

Does the dog have a significant undercoat?

Is the coat healthy and manageable, or are there mats and tangles?

These differences matter because a grooming method that works beautifully for one dog may be completely inappropriate for another.

That is why Dog Base does not work according to the principle:

“Just shave everything short.”

Instead, we consider what is appropriate for the individual coat.

✂️ Scissoring or clipping – what’s the difference?

Both techniques have their place in professional dog grooming.

✂️ Scissoring

Scissors allow the groomer to shape the coat and work on individual areas with precision.

They can be used for shaping the body, legs, head and transitions depending on the coat and desired style.

Scissor work can also help create a natural-looking finish.

🪒 Clipping

Electric clippers allow the coat to be shortened to a relatively consistent length using appropriate blades or attachment combs.

Clipping can be practical for suitable coat types and certain styles.

But clipping is not automatically appropriate for every coat.

A dog having “a lot of hair” does not automatically mean the entire coat should be shaved.

A clean, properly dried and prepared coat can be worked much more accurately than a dirty or damp coat.

Depending on the coat, bathing and drying can help:

• separate individual hairs
• reveal tangles
• prepare the coat for cutting
• create a more even grooming result

This is why a professional haircut often involves considerably more than the actual cutting itself.

🧶 What happens when a coat is matted?

Matting is one of the most important factors when deciding what haircut is possible.

A photograph of a beautifully fluffy dog may show the desired result – but if the existing coat is severely matted close to the skin, preserving that length may not be realistic.

We do not want to spend an unreasonable amount of time aggressively pulling at a dog’s coat simply to preserve a particular appearance.
